"It's just madness" - Local TD condemns "tragic" inner-city shooting as gardaí seek witnesses

A 53-year-old man was shot dead as he stood in the doorway of a shop yesterday.

GARDAÍ HAVE APPEALED for taxi drivers or motorists who may have camera recording equipment on their cars and who were in Dublin’s south-inner city yesterday to come forward after a man was shot dead.

Gardaí re-issued an appeal for witnesses last night after the shooting, in which a 53-year-old man was shot dead as he stood in the doorway of a shop Bridgefoot Street.

The man was named locally as David ‘Daithi’ Douglas.

Witnesses said he was shot a number of times by a lone gunman who fled the scene.

A silver/grey Mercedes Benz CLA with a 161 D 26702  registration number was found burnt out a short distance from the scene at Spitalfields, close to Carman’s Hall.

Gardaí believe the vehicle may have been in the general area where the shooting took place for some time before the incident.

They have asked for taxi drivers or other motorists who may have cameras on their vehicles and who may have been in the general area or surrounding areas between 3.15pm and 4.30pm to come forward.

“It’s just madness”

Dublin South Central TD Joan Collins said that the shooting was just the latest “tragic killing” in the area and that proper organisation was needed from gardaí to tackle the issue.

“It’s another tragic killing in the area that’s completely unnecessary,” said the Collins.

“We don’t know yet if it links in with any of the crime gang issues that are going on at the moment.

It’s just madness that it’s going on and and on and on.

Collins also said that people area needed to be better protected and that more funding should be delivered for community initiatives.

“Two people involved”

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Superintendent Patrick McMenamin said that there at least two people involved in the shooting.

“There were at least two people involved. Tall and thin is the only description we have at this stage,” he said.

We believe one person was involved in the shooting itself and another person was driving the car. It’s very early and we’re appealing for witnesses to come forward.

He added that a handgun was recovered at the scene and that it was currently being examined.

Gardaí said that it was unclear as of yet if the shooting was linked to the ongoing feud between the Hutch and Kinahan gangs, which has seen multiple people killed over the past nine months.

McMenamin also said yesterday that “it is far too early to speculate” when questioned over the feud connection.

Witnesses or anyone with information are being asked to contact Gardaí at Kevin Street Garda Station on 01 6669400, The Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
